What’s up everybody?! Today I’ll be talking about a new exhibit at the Art Museum. This should excite everyone, especially photographers. It’s the Paul Strand exhibit! My friends Liz and Kim invited me to their photography class field trip to the museum. Coincidentally, I’ve been wanting to go to this exhibit for a while now but haven’t got the time to do so because of all the homework due and many tests coming up. So they invited me to the Art Museum (thanks!) and I’ve met so many friendly people. These lovely people ALL signed up for the STAMP pass and used it the first time to see the exhibit!
If you don’t know who Paul Strand is, let me give you some background information on him. Strand is an American photographer and also filmmaker who brought on the idea that photography is an art form. Back in his time, many people did not see photography as an art form. They believe it’s just the technical way of putting what you see now and duplicating that image to a paper. Many artists at this time wanted others to believe that yes this is an art form. So they did things like rub grease over their camera lens to give it a nice effect when the pictures are printed. But Strand is very different. He believes that the pictures he takes is art itself and does not need altering. When people started to realize that it is an art form, this is the time Strand began travelling all around the world taking pictures of ordinary to extraordinary things. Strand is definitely one of the top five American photographers. He is the reason why people now believe even photography is art.
Moving on to the exhibit itself! Every picture is in chronological order from his first to his last pictures taken. Pictures are about 8×10 in dimension, so it is not that big. Typically, it is small because Strand didn’t maximize his photographs. Every one of his pictures are so perfectly caught in time, such as his piece called “Truckman’s house.” He took a picture of a regular building and raising it to be an extraordinary piece. You can see the progress of disintegration perfectly.
When you go through this exhibit, keep in mind that it is not just about analyzing these things but also how Strand has the ability to capture nature at its best. I also suggest coming in to the exhibit with an audio tour. It further explains why Strand took the pictures he took and what they are, and so on. At the end of the exhibit, they also put up the cameras that Strand used. I know, WHAT?! I couldn’t believe it either! I probably looked at these old cameras for an hour or so. It amazes me how far technology has come!
Overall, I am very stoked that Strand has his own exhibit and I can’t wait until you guys visit it! I recommend photographers out there, amateurs and professionals, to learn from the best photographer.

When you hear the word Autumn, what words do you think of? For me, the words Halloween and sweater weather come to my mind. I hope everyone is enjoying the great Autumn weather because I surely am. A few weeks ago, my friends and I went to Eastern State Penitentiary to do the Terror Behind the Walls haunted house attraction. And let me tell you, they were not playing around this year.
Terror Behind the Walls is probably the best haunted house I’ve ever been to. I am a person who loves watching horror movies and haunted houses. I expected this haunted house to be like every other one I’ve been to. Boring. But I was very wrong. There are six attractions you will go through. And before you even go in, the staff of Eastern State ask if you want to be a part of the interactive haunted house or not. In other words, you choose whether or not you want to be touched. My friends and I bravely chose the interactive version. That means we get a pink necklace that will tell the “criminals” inside the attractions that they are allowed to drag us from our group and get us lost. That also means they can touch your hair, arms, and grab you unexpectedly.
At one of the attractions, I was forced by a “dentist” to follow him into a dark room and let me tell you, I was completely and utterly horrified! After keeping me in that dark room for a few minutes, they finally let me go and I walked through a narrow hallway that led me outside. There, I saw my friends and we’ve reunited. There are parts of the attractions where I was so terrified I ran through some of the attractions.
After the haunted house attraction is over, there are booths opened where you can buy snacks and drinks after being scared for a good 30 minutes.
Because it is such an amazing haunted house, I want you guys to experience it as well. So I won’t spill anymore details and ruin the surprises in store for you. Sadly, STAMP members can’t get any discounts. But I will share a secret with you. Well, it’s not a secret but more like a tip. If you buy the tickets online, it is so much cheaper than it is at the place. Here is the link for ticket sales and dates they are open. Bring your friends and family! It’s a great way to spend Halloween this year.
The school year is here and I am betting most of you are already sick of school! But guess what? There are some fun things coming up at Eastern State! The Gargoyles of Eastern State Penitentiary are up! What does this mean?! It means that Halloween is almost here. What does THAT mean? It means the annual Terror Behind The Walls is back! I am definitely excited for that.
Weighing 300 pounds each, these gargoyles are named Frank and Carson. Apparently, these guys stopped traffic while they were being put up! Putting up the gargoyles signals the start of Halloween. I’m already getting chills thinking about it! Halloween is no doubt my favorite holiday. I love horror movies, haunted houses, and the thrill of it all.
There are some new things being added to the Haunted House this year, so stay tuned for that! You can order tickets here and save some money. It’s way cheaper online than it is at the doors. (You can thank me later!) This year, the haunted house will open Friday, September 19 and ends on Saturday, November 8. So save these dates if you don’t want to miss it! I missed last year’s terror behind the walls, but I am planning on going this year.
Aside from the exciting Halloween event, Pets and Prison is still going on and it will take place September 27th and 28th. This will be the last 2 days for you and your family to learn new stories about animals. This event will be held the whole entire day!
Alright guys, that’s basically some of the things coming up at Eastern State. I highly recommend for you all to try and go because school is wearing me out and I know that it’s wearing out Seniors and Juniors out there too! These events will be fun and exciting and I promise you that it’ll be unforgettable.
