Week 6 – Thursday, August 13
I never imagined working at an arts and culture based museum. I always wanted to work at the Please Touch Museum or the Academy of Natural Science. Why? You may ask. I always had a desire to work with children, but I never knew exactly how I wanted to engage with them. As I got older, I realized the best way to do it was through teaching. After a 6-week summer internship with Bloomberg Philanthropies and WorkReady, I am now a part time educator and visitors service representative at the National Liberty Museum. At the museum I create activities to help children learn more about the museum in an exciting, kid friendly way. I am also the joyful, optimistic person persuading you to buy a ticket at the front desk and a small gift in the gift shop as well. Working at the museum allowed me to see how much work goes into running a museum and how hard educators work to make the museum enjoyable for all ages. As an education team member, the most important part of my job is to express my creativity, and watch my ideas come to life in the museum.
You should never dismiss opportunities just because it is not in your interest. As some guy once said, “don’t knock it till you try it”. You don’t have to be like me and work at a museum to change your perspective. Just go to one first, and go to one for free with a handy dandy STAMP pass. Once you get your pass visit all the museums you possibly can. You never know, one visit can change your life.
