On Sunday October 6th, the STAMP Teen Council and The Philadelphia Young Playwrights Teen Council teamed up to see a performance of In the Heights at the Walnut Street Theater! IT WAS SO FUN!
First we all met at Top Tomato Pizza Kitchen to get some pizza which was absolutely delicious, so make sure to get your pizza there! We mingled and met some new friends so that was nice!
Then we all walked down anxiously waiting to see the performance. I had never seen In the Heights before so I was really excited because I heard great things about it! In the Heights won a TONY award in 2008 for Best Musical. The musical takes place over three days and tells the story of Dominican-Americans who live in Washington Heights. The actors did a fabulous job! The music was beautiful and there were even songs that featured some rapping! While watching it you go through many emotions. Overall I thought the musical was amazing!
After the musical we had the chance to go to the talk-back with Quiara Alegría Hudes, the writer of the book, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the music and lyrics. Quiara Alegría Hudes is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and is also a Philadelphia Young Playwrights alum. They were both very inspiring and made the night so much better!
Seeing In the Heights and sitting though the talk-back was a great experience and I highly recommend seeing the show! Unfortunately its final show at the Walnut Street Theater was October 20th, but please find a way to see it elsewhere! Great job to everyone who was in the show and thank you Quiara and Lin for creating this beautiful piece of art! See ya next time Philly!
