Awa finds her Brave New Voice

Awa finds her Brave New Voice

Hi, the Brave New Voices poetry workshop with Ursula Rucker was amazing. She inspired me to write my own poetry. I’ve learned that writing poetry can help you get out everything that you can’t really tell anybody. I am the type of person who doesn’t like expressing their feelings, so I think I found my way to express my feelings. When Ursula told us one of her poems about her brother, it felt like I was there in the story seeing everything that was happening. Anytime I read poetry or listen to it, I can’t picture the story at all. Mrs. Rucker made me want to become a poet just like her. I also learned that you have to write from your heart, and say it from your heart. I told her that I am a shy person; she said “that doesn’t matter close your eyes and act like nobody is there”. When she was reciting her poem she closed her eyes, and she pretended like nobody was there because she is shy also.
